Decompression Q & A

What is spinal decompression therapy?

Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy is a type of motorized traction. It gently stretches your spine to help relieve pressure on the discs that provide cushioning between your vertebrae. The goal is to provide relief from back pain, leg pain, and to alleviate pressure on herniated (bulging) discs in your spinal column.

Decompression creates a negative pressure by gently stretching your spine. This negative pressure helps promote the movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into damaged discs so they can heal themselves, naturally.

What can I expect during a spinal decompression session?

Spinal decompression therapy is typically not a painful experience. For bulging discs in your lower back, you lie comfortably on a motorized table of which the lower half moves. You have a harness around your hips that’s attached to the table near your feet.

The upper part of the table remains stable while the lower part slides back and forth to provide traction to stretch your spine. The treatment shouldn’t be painful, but you’ll feel a stretch in your spine. Decompression therapy typically lasts about 30-45 minutes for each session.

How many decompression sessions do I need?

Based on your individual needs, and as part of complete treatment therapy, Dr. Jordan may recommend a series of decompression sessions over several weeks. He may also combine decompression with other modalities during or following decompression, including:

  • Electric muscle stimulation
  • Ultrasound
  • Cold or heat therapy
  • Exercises

He may recommend exercises for you to do at home between decompression appointments, too.

Am I a good candidate for spinal decompression therapy?

If you suffer from herniated discs that cause chronic pain in your back, neck, or legs, you may be a good candidate for decompression therapy. Additionally, if you suffer from sciatica, degenerative disc disease, or injured or diseased spinal nerve roots, spinal decompression may be helpful in providing pain relief.

Dr. Jordan carefully assesses your type of back pain and determines if decompression is an essential part of your treatment plan.

You may not be a good candidate if you have osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, or certain health conditions.
